Learning New Skills

As an introduction to Service as Action the Grade 6 students collaborated to design and make a quilt for the School Nurse’s room. The idea was the quilt would help sick students or teachers feel warm and the colourful and happy pictures would be cheering and help the person to feel better.

Students first sketched their idea, and then used fabric markers to transfer the design to fabric. The students took it in turns to stitch the pieces together with the sewing machines, and Mrs Meinck completed the quilt with a fleecy backing. During the whole process they learn also how to document the project and reflect on their achievements. The students were very proud of their efforts and the new skills they had learned, and Nurse Heike was thrilled to receive the quilt for the room.
